Daal (Curried Lentils)
This recipe can be used with Red lentils, Toor Mung or Chana dal.
1 cup Daal
1 tsp Cumin seeds
8-10 Curry leaves
2 lge cloves Garlic, fresh , sliced
1 small Chili fresh, sliced
1 tsp Turmeric
Salt to taste
2 tblsp Oil/Ghee
Wash daal, put in a heavy bottomed pan with 2 cups water and salt and let simmer until soft. Keep topping up the water if it dries up.
In a frying pan, heat oil, then add cumin seed, garlic, chili and curry leaves. Stir for a couple of minutes then add the turmeric. Stir for a few seconds then pour this into the pot of daal. Simmer for about 5 minutes. Goes well with bread or rice.
Optional - Sprinkle fried onion and fresh coriander herb just before serving.
